Pastor Mathew's Corner

About two months ago, God began burdening my heart to return to the mission field.  I remember thinking, “that can’t be God’s plan as I am staying in Sikeston until I retire, and we just got here.”  As different things externally happened around me, I decided to investigate if there might be any open doors for a 52-year-old “former” missionary.  On a wild idea, I called the Alaska Baptist Convention, and they directed me to an organization called Arctic Barnabas.  I called and the director told me about a small mission opportunity to the Aleutian people and outreach to multiple nationalities working at a fishing plant.  As he told me more, I said I would be willing to talk with the mission board.  One thing led to another, and they invited us to check out the mission in Alaska.  Akutan is an island that has a small Aleutian village (unreached people) and one of the largest fish processing plants in North America.   The plant has over 1,300 workers from America, Mongolia, Philippine, Ukraine, Mexico, and other nationalities.  It is a vision to reach the nations and see them raised up.  As I was talking to an SBC pastor serving in another part of Alaska, he was explaining to me how much heresy there is in the Alaskan churches and few preachers.  As we were talking, he said the word, “Alaska needs godly pastors.”  When he said that, the Holy Spirit spoke into my heart the words from Isaiah 6.  “Whom shall I send and who will go for me?”  At that moment I sensed a call to go to that place and told the ministry board of our call on Monday (the day we returned).  Although I sensed a call and many asked me if we were gone there for a view for a call, the mission board had not officially invited us, and I waited.  Then on Wednesday after evening Bible Study they contacted me and invited us to come.  October 16 will be my final Sunday and my last Wednesday Bible Study is October 20.  During the coming weeks I will share more with you about the mission and be building a prayer team.  As Diane and our family follow God’s call it is encouraging to ask where is God calling you?

Praying,

Pastor Mathew
